The Affiliated Mental Health Center of Zhejiang University School of Medicine

The Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Brain Science and Brain Medicine

Founded in 1954, we are a specialized hospital integrating medical treatment, education, research, rehabilitation, and prevention for psychiatric and psychological diseases (graded AAA). We are also named the Affiliated Mental Health Center of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and the Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Brain Science and Brain Medicine. With national key clinical specialties, we are one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in China. The inpatient department of our home campus has 1,100 beds, while that of the West Zhejiang division has 500. The annual 600,000 outpatient visits and 25,000 discharges make our workload for specialized clinical services the highest in the province. Our patients come from all around eastern China.

A place that puts life first

As the city’s treatment center for complex and critical psychiatric disorders, the redefined procedures and work models allow us to have made the country’s first successful for modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) with tracheal intubation on a patient suffering severe stupor. Both our case mix index (CMI) and diseases with relative weight (RW) at or above 2 are ranked No. 1 in the province. We invented a neuromodulation therapic platform to offer holistic care with non-invasive brain circuit neuromodulation technologies (e.g., sound, light, electricity, and magnet). We harness the power of combining the internet with innovative solutions. We take the lead in building a smart hospital information system (i.e., smart medicine, smart service, smart management, and smart research) and are one of the first psychiatric hospitals in eastern China to be rated as Level 4 in the National Healthcare Information Connectivity Plan. The pilot project “5G + Sleep Health Management”, passed the review of the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. For consolidating online and offline user experience, we developed an intelligent auxiliary diagnosis platform for common psychiatric and psychological diseases and a digital brain platform for teenagers. The platforms won us a grand prize for digital therapy in the 2nd National Digital Health Innovation Application Competition.

A robust talent pipeline

Our elite workforce, which includes four vice chairs of national academic organizations and 15 vice chairs of provincial academic organizations, has received a total of 8 talent titles at national and provincial levels and 22 ones at the municipal level. In addition, more than 20 top experts in the Chinese psychiatric community work for us part-time. As one of the first institutions to provide psychiatric teaching and training in the province, we are the deputy director of the Ministry of Education’s Psychiatric Teaching Steering Committee for Colleges and Universities, director of Zhejiang University’s Psychiatric Graduate Education Committee, and one of the first psychiatric hospitals in Zhejiang to be designated as a National Standardized Resident Training Base. We recruited 52 resident psychiatrists in 2024 (158 are now in standardized training), making up 32.5% of the province’s total and placing first in the province.

A research-centered hospital

As the first research-centered psychiatric hospital in the province’s action plan, we boast a site of over 4,000 square meters for clinical research and a set of equipment worth more than 70 million yuan. We act as top-tier research platforms, like Zhejiang Clinical Research Center for Mental Diseases, Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Clinical and Basic Research on Mental Diseases, Zhejiang Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Diagnosis and Treatment of Psychiatric and Psychological Diseases, and the Institute of Psychiatry of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. In the past three years, we’ve secured at least 150 million yuan in funding for various projects, published 392 papers, authored or translated 16 books, and obtained nearly 40 patents and software copyrights.

A social psychological service system

We co-initiated the Eastern China Community Mental Health Alliance and are involved in the National Pilot Cities for the Comprehensive Management of Severe Mental Disorders, National Pilot Cities for Social Psychological Service System, and National Demonstration Sites for Psychological Crisis Intervention & Assistance Hotline. For the strategic goal of building “Healthy China,” we integrate resources to foster a mental health talent training system, take a proactive approach in mental health promotion services, screen reasonably to build a comprehensive system for the elderly, and seek innovations in helping children and adolescents.
